Just like the cocktail drink in real life, the film "Cocktail" tells the story of three individuals who get caught up with their emotions and inner spirits when true love is discovered. Veronica (Deepika Padukone) is a rich wild child, impulsive and constantly looking for distractions to escape facing issues of a troubled upbringing. Meera (Diana Penty) on the other hand, is a shy, introvert and recovering from a hoax marriage to Kunal Ahuja (Randeep Hooda) who has duped her off her life-savings by using the pretense of setting up a base for them in London. When Meera is left by her husband, Veronica offers her roof and they both then forge a loyal and solid friendship. This is when Meera with her cultural upbringing changes Veronica's apartment into a place called "home".

In comes Casanova cum playboy, Gautam (Saif Ali Khan) who literally cannot keep his pants up as he enters the girls' lives and forms a relationship with Veronica. Somehow though, it becomes a beautifully balanced friendship between the three. Along the way, things get complicated when Gautam and Meera develop feelings and fall in love with each other. This is where the story truly unfolds, to see if Meera would sacrifice her love for her friendship, or will Veronica sacrifice her friendship for love? How will Gautam settle this dilemma?

Deepika Padukone who was initially offered the role of Meera, hammers in the best performance of the lot as Veronica. Playing an erratic and an almost love-wrecked character make her an interesting watch throughout the film. Saif Ali Khan returns to his usual best as a comedic actor and his character as a cocky flirtatious guy is lovable to watch despite him getting away with the girls easily. Newcomer Diane Penty (model turned actress and in her Bollywood debut) gets away with looking pretty and vulnerable, but lacks confidence in acting and her dance moves. Dimple Kapadia as Saif's mom injects enough humour with her portrayal of a loud Punjabi mom while Boman Irani as Saif's uncle provides surprise comedy scenes along the way.

The first half is quite breezy, funny and laced with Saif's roguish charm, Deepika raging Dipsomania and Diana's bashfulness. In the second half though, the plot somehow goes a little haywire but despite all, the scramble by Homi Adajani (director) and writer (Imtiaz Ali), the pieces fall back together providing a meaningful and touching drama.

The music by Pritam is good, but the film could have done away with the "Jugni" track. Lyrics by Irshad Kamil are a definite highlight of the album as they convey the emotions simple and effortlessly. Some of the good tracks are "Tum Hi Ho Bandhu" by Neeraj Shridhar and Kavita Seth, and "Daaru Desi" by Benny Dayal and Shalmali Kholgade which is bound to keep youngsters engaged. As for cinematography, Anil Metha's camera captures London beautifully and Anaita's Shroff's wardrobe choices are well suited for the characters in the film.

Overall, "Cocktail" is a contemporary film that reflects life as it happens all around us. Just as crazy, twisted, beautiful, funny, weird and lonely as anyone's life can be. It's about easy choices and hard decisions and how life still goes on; cocktail that is definitely worth a try.
